Abductees’ Mothers Association’s Statement on the Vigil Held in Conjunction with the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists

02/11/2022 12:51:27

In continuation of the advocacy campaign launched by Abductees’ Mothers Association entitled (Justice for Abductees) and in conjunction with the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, November 2, we call for the release of all the kidnapped and detained journalists, the foremost of whom are 6 journalists abducted by the Houthi group (Tawfiq Al-Mansouri, Abdul-Khaleq Emran, Akram Al-Walidy, Harith Hamid, Nabil Al-Saddawi, Younis Abdul-Salam), in addition to the forcibly disappeared journalist (Wahid al-Sufi).

It is worth mentioning that most of these journalists have been kidnapped for more than 6 years, including 4 journalists under threat of the death penalty.

We also demand the release of journalist (Ahmed Maher), who is detained by the Security Belt Forces of the Transitional Council.

The kidnapped journalists were subjected to numerous violations, including enforced disappearance and severe physical torture, such as severe beatings with sticks, electric wires and rifle butts until they bleed, hung for long hours, electric shocks, in addition to intimidating them by using police dogs and mentally-ill men.

They are also medically neglected, which has significantly affected their physical health and caused them to suffer from chronic diseases that reduce their practical opportunities.

Furthermore, the kidnapped journalists are threatened and videotaped to force them to make statements dictated to them under torture and psychological pressure in exchange for their freedom.

By holding this vigil in front of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, we condemn all violations committed against the abducted and detained journalists.

We call for dropping the death sentences against the four kidnapped journalists and for their unconditional release and the release of all journalists.

On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, we demand that those who detained, disappeared and tortured journalists be held accountable.

We also demand to ensure that the perpetrators of these violations against journalists and those who ordered their practice do not escape with impunity.
