On the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the Abductees’ Mothers Association warns, in a joint statement with the Justice4Yemen Pact Coalition, that closing secret prisons without independent judicial oversight and without enabling victims and their families to access the truth constitutes a serious threat to victims’ rights and opens the door to concealing evidence of torture and enforced disappearance and allowing perpetrators to escape accountability.
This warning is based on the documentation carried out by the Association of cases of enforced disappearance and secret detention sites, as well as the violations it has documented against detainees. The Association stresses that the right of victims and their families to know the truth, preserve evidence, and hold those responsible accountable are fundamental rights.
The Association calls for the urgent disclosure of the fate of all forcibly disappeared persons, the release of those arbitrarily detained, redress for victims and their families, ensuring accountability and justice, and preventing perpetrators of violations from escaping accountability.
