The Abductees’ Mothers Association has urgently demanded that both local and international authorities initiate an immediate investigation and apprehend those responsible for the violations against forcibly disappeared individuals behind prison bars, seeking justice for the victims.
This call to action was made during a press conference held by the association on Wednesday morning May 29, 2024 in Taiz governorate. The conference aimed to condemn and denounce the inhumane crimes committed by parties to the conflict against the forcibly disappeared, many of whom have suffered to the point of death.
The association pointed out that the Houthi group is at the top of the list of entities violating international and local laws designed to protect abductees, detainees, and forcibly disappeared persons.
Recently, several forcibly disappeared individuals have reappeared as lifeless bodies after being hidden for years, causing immense suffering to families who had clung to the hope of their loved ones’ release after extensive searches.
One such case is that of “Najib Hassan,” whose family revealed during the press conference that they received news of his death after nearly seven years of forced disappearance by the Houthi group. Despite continuous searches in various Houthi prisons in Sana’a, Dhamar, and elsewhere, the family faced severe tragedies, including the death of Hassan’s daughter a week after learning of his abduction, his son’s development of diabetes due to the stress, and his father’s death a month after the abduction.
The Abductess’ Mothers Association reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the complete release of all abducted, forcibly disappeared, and detained individuals. To date, the association has successfully secured the release of 1,201 documented abductees, though 151 remain forcibly disappeared with their fates unknown.
The association emphasized the urgent need to end the profound suffering of the abducted and their families by preventing further abductions and forced disappearances. This requires prompt investigation, accountability for the violations, and justice for the victims.
The association considers resolving the issue of abductees as the first essential step towards achieving comprehensive and just peace in Yemen.
