A Statement by the Abductees’ Mothers Association Condemning the Continued Houthi Abduction of Five Baha’i Individuals

The Abductees’ Mothers Association condemns the continued abduction of five Baha’i individuals in Yemen by the Houthi group. These individuals, along with 12 others including five women, were abducted on May 25, 2023. While local, regional, and international efforts have secured the release of 12 abductees, their freedom remains restricted under surveillance. Meanwhile, the five Baha’is have been held captive for a year.

This ongoing detention represents a flagrant violation of human rights, contravening fundamental principles of justice and human dignity. We vehemently denounce these severe violations, from the initial abduction and poor detention conditions to the continued refusal to release these individuals. We hold the Houthi group fully accountable for their safety and well-being.

The Abductees’ Mothers Association reaffirms that freedom of religion, thought, and belief are fundamental rights protected by international human rights treaties and conventions. All parties must adhere to these principles.

We call upon the international community, human rights organizations, and UN bodies to maintain pressure on the Houthis to halt these violations, ensure the safety and freedom of all abductees, and work together to achieve justice and uphold human rights for all.

Furthermore, we demand an international investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the abduction and detention of the Baha’is and all other abductees, to expose the abuses committed against them, and to bring the perpetrators to justice to prevent the recurrence of such relentless violations.
