Abductees’ Mothers Association supports a UN memorandum holding the Houthi group responsible for the abduction of lawyer Abdul Majeed Sabrah

The Abductees’ Mothers Association announces its full support for the memorandum issued by five UN Special Rapporteurs and Working Groups affiliated with the United Nations Human Rights Council, which holds the Houthi group legally responsible for the crime of arbitrary abduction of human rights lawyer Abdul Majeed Sabrah, known for his defense and advocacy for abductees.

The Association affirms that isolating lawyer Sabrah, cutting off communication with him, and holding him in solitary confinement constitute a blatant violation of international legal rules that prohibit enforced disappearance, and represent an assault on human rights defenders. The Association also supports the memorandum’s call for the Houthi group to comply with Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions and with international human rights law. It warns of the dangers of undermining the system of legal protection and targeting lawyers and human rights advocates who work to defend victims.

The Association considers the targeting of a human rights lawyer working to defend abductees a violation of the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, and an attempt to intimidate human rights defenders and prevent them from carrying out their duties independently and with protection.

The Association commends the UN experts’ call for the immediate disclosure of the place of detention of lawyer Abdul Majeed Sabrah, clarification of the legal basis for his arrest, guarantees for his physical safety and his right to a fair trial, and an end to the use of security agencies to criminalize freedom of expression and monopolize the public sphere.

The Houthi group had arrested lawyer Sabrah on September 25, 2025, following a post he published on social media platforms during the celebrations of the September 26 Revolution. The Abductees’ Mothers Association has followed his case since the first day, issuing a statement condemning his arrest and calling for his release, and conveying his family’s appeals to local and international public opinion.

The Association reaffirms its continued efforts to demand the release of lawyer Sabrah, as well as all abductees, detainees, and forcibly disappeared persons held by all parties, and to ensure that perpetrators of these violations do not escape accountability.
