Statement of strong condemnation and denunciation of the abduction of a humanitarian mediator in Sana’a

The Abductees’ Mothers Association strongly condemns and denounces the abduction of the humanitarian mediator on the prisoners and detainees file, Sheikh Abdul Latif Al-Muradi, by armed elements affiliated with the Houthi group. He was abducted from a market in the capital, Sana’a, while visiting his family during the Eid al-Fitr holiday. The abduction of Al-Muradi, who has worked for many years as a humanitarian mediator between the parties and successfully facilitated several prisoner exchange operations and the release of Abductees, constitutes a dangerous precedent on both the humanitarian and human rights levels. It threatens to undermine local efforts aimed at alleviating the suffering of abductees and resolving this humanitarian issue.

The Abductees’ Mothers Association affirms that the abduction of lawyers and local mediators specializing in the abductees’ file sends a clear message of obstructing peace efforts in Yemen. It also places the ongoing negotiations under a real test regarding the Houthi group’s intentions and credibility in resolving this humanitarian issue through tangible, positive steps on the ground. While holding the Houthi group fully responsible for the life and safety of the mediator Abdul Latif Al-Muradi, we call for his immediate release, as well as that of lawyer Abdul Majeed Sabra. We also urge cooperation with mediators and human rights advocates to resolve the abductees’ file, rather than imprisoning them.

We further stress that the continuation of such violations requires serious local and international action and pressure to end abduction practices and compel the Houthi group to engage in serious and urgent negotiations based on the principle of “all for all,” without conditions.
