The Abductees Mothers Association is following with deep concern the continued abduction of lawyer and human rights advocate Abdulmajid Sabrah, who has been detained for more than 260 days in the prisons of the Houthi Intelligence and Security Service in Sana’a without any legal basis and without being granted his legal rights.
The Association expresses grave concern over the harsh detention conditions endured by Abdulmajid Sabrah, which drove him to launch an open-ended hunger strike in protest against his continued arbitrary detention and the absence of any avenue for justice. The strike only ended after intervention by members of his family, who persuaded him to break it out of fear for the deterioration of his health and the risk posed to his life.
The Abductees Mothers Association holds the Houthi group fully responsible for the life and safety of lawyer Abdulmajid Sabrah and for any physical or psychological harm he may suffer as a result of his continued unlawful detention and the denial of his fundamental rights.
The Association emphasizes that the continued detention of Mr. Sabrah constitutes a flagrant violation of fundamental rights and freedoms and is particularly alarming given his prominent human rights standing and his more than ten years of dedicated work defending abductees and forcibly disappeared persons and advocating for justice and the rule of law.
Accordingly, the Abductees Mothers Association calls for the immediate and unconditional release of lawyer and human rights advocate Abdulmajid Sabrah. It also calls for guarantees to protect his physical and psychological well-being and to ensure that he is granted all of his legal and humanitarian rights.
The Abductees Mothers Association further urges local and international human rights organizations, the United Nations, and the international community to take urgent action and exert pressure to end his abduction. The Association also expresses its full solidarity with Mr. Sabrah’s family.
Defending rights and freedoms should never lead to imprisonment. The continued detention of one of Yemen’s most prominent defenders of abductees constitutes a grave affront to the principles of justice and the rule of law and requires urgent action to end his suffering and restore his freedom.
